Aloe  An ideal kitchen plant and beautiful ornamental, Aloe is a large family of easy to grow succulents with more than 300 varieties mostly native to Africa. The succulent leaves of all species form in a rosette pattern, with a tall tower of flowers forming upon maturation of the plant. Giant Tree Aloe - Casts a dramatic shape on the desolate skyline of Southern Africa. This massive succulent tree can be up to 30 feet tall, there are only a few branches high up on the trunk and reaching skywards, while the leaves tend to droop down. The bark is pale and smooth, often flaking off in large sections. The bright yellow flowers are produced on branched inflorescences that are located below the leaf rosettes. Thie Aloe is a must for both tropical and desert gardens.

Aloe are one of the most rewarding, easy to grow, virtually pest free, home and patio plants available that seem to grow best when neglected. They add a wonderful accent to any desert garden or window sill and have beautiful summer flowers that can be enjoyed early summer to late fall.   You won't get field dug, bare root or immature plants. All our live Aloe plants are 2-4 year old and are extremely well established. Aloes come in the growers pot with the growers soil mix (NOT BARE ROOT), are very well packed and only mildly trimmed before shipping. There is NO waiting years for your new Aloe to establish itself, NO guessing if a bare root plant will survive the shock of division and transportation, NO having to plant immediately. Just keep the pot in a shady area and water when dry.   The care & culture info. below is a general guideline and may or may not work in your environment. Ideal use:  Border and independent desert garden, Containerized 6"-12" diameter  6" deep pots.   POOR 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 EXCELLENT Hardiness Shipability Growth Rate Outdoor Zone  9 - 12  Avoid frost. Height - Aloe vary drastically depending on species (see above). Recommended Container Size - Most gardeners don't realize that Aloe do very well in containers. Container size may vary depending on the growth rate of the plant. Allow enough room for growth generally a 6" to a 12" diameter, 6" deep container will do well. Water - Aloe must be treated like Cactus and water when nearly dry. Over watering will kill the plant. Light - 70-100% Sun - Morning to afternoon sun is best. When planting outside expect the plant to go dormant while acclimating to its new environment. Soil - Well drained, sandy Cactus mix.   Beautiful blooms appear summer to fall. Aloe plants ship grower direct in a full 6" pot. Leaves are trimmed to reduce shipping stress. Fertilize -  Fertilizer can be detrimental to Aloe and too much can kill the plant so fertilize sparingly with 10-10-10 or 12-12-12. For in ground planting, broadcast a balanced granular fertilizer once a month. Pests - Slugs can be a minor problem in early spring  - to rid yourself of these unwanted pests simply sprinkle some slug and snail bait around the base of the plants. When you receive your new Aloe - Open your box carefully and water immediately. Planting Information - (Click here)  Plant in ground in well drained, sandy soil in the spring to fall. Space plants to allow clumps to form and develop properly. If planted too tightly there will not be enough room for root expansion and plants will not reach their full height and bloom potential. Basic Propagation: Plantlets Works well for propagation of Amazonica, Blue Elf, Ciliaris, Ferox, Ferox, Spike, Green Gold, Nobilis, Saponaria, Stripe, Tiger Tooth, Variegata, Vera, Zanzibirica. New plants come very well established w/ pot. Cut through the root mass to separate plantlets. Divide each plant and separate their roots. Start new plantlets with fresh well drained soil. Cuttings Works well for propagation of  Arborescens MD, Blue Elf , Ciliaris, Stricta, Trastii, Tiger Tooth. New plants come very well established w/ pot. Aloe Ciliaris shown Cut 6 in. sections and remove lower leaves. Mother will now branch. Carefully remove lower leaves and allow the cut to callus for 2 days. Start new cuttings with fresh well drained soil. Don't water for 1 week. Seeds & Pups Work well for propagation of most Aloe. Most Aloe will eventually produce seed however pups only seem to show up on the flower stalk of Aloe Amazonica. Beautiful blooms appear summer to fall. Aloe species  produce seeds & pups.
