Alocasia New Guinea Gold- A most curious form from Papua
New Guinea that has a peculiar habit of producing variegated
leaves only at certain times of the year (typically late summer
through Autumn), occasionally missing out entirely in a year.
This is not a typical case of variegation reversion since
for the most part the plant does return to producing variegated
leaves each year. There seems to be no apparent reason
for this behavior. This very beautiful plant is quite
different from the typical elephant ear. The thick
sculpted glossy green and gold speckling makes this
elephant ear unique. The leaves are held upright on
dramatically rigid stems. It is quite hardy,
surviving 0 degrees F, but prefers warmer conditions.
When they are young the leaves are completely green.
The speckling begins after the plants are a few months
old. The leaves on these plants are approximately 14 -16 in.
long and the plants mature height is 5'-6'. What an impressive
addition to any tropical plant collection.

Colocasia Nancyana is one of those rare introductions that immediately becomes the new industry standard. Introduced at the 2000 International Aroid Society meeting in Florida, this dazzling elephant ear became the most wanted plant at the meeting. Emerging solid green, the 25 in. wide light green leaves begin turning butter cream-yellow along the center. The color then pours down into the main vein creating a huge bold Y-pattern in the center of the leaf. Color then bursts into the lateral side veins and begins its march to the margins. Coloring starts in spring, shortly after the first fully leaves mature. It sends out lots of side stolons which will root into the soil where moisture is adequate. The more moisture the larger the plant will grow.

This spectacular form of the hardy elephant ear comes to us from a garden in Anniston, Alabama where it was discovered by SPEPS member Hayes Jackson. We can attest that this clumper has both phenomenal vigor as well as hardiness. Each 3 ft. long leaf has incredibly scalloped edges that set it apart from typical Colocasia Esculenta. In growth habit, it performs here as a clumper, unlike the more stoloniferous forms. Colocasia Ruffles has also multiplied faster than any elephant ear we have grown, with clumps multiplying from 1 to 100 divisions in twelve months.
