Ginger > Alpinia
Known by many different names,
Shell ginger, Red ginger, Siamese ginger... Alpinia grow in a
clumping formation with reed-like stems, Canna-like leaves and
orchid-like flowers. These ginger prefer sun to partial shade and
a rich moist well-drained soil. Their large rhizomatous roots are
fairly hardy and usually resprout after cold temperatures,
the stems however, will not flower until the second season of
growth, which make these ginger nonflowering unless kept warm year
round. The foliage is fragrant if crushed or bruised, the flowers
produce little to no aroma. These ginger will add a tropical feel
to any location. |
