Flowering Hosta
Found on rocky stream sides, woodlands and alpine meadows in China, Korea, Japan and East Russia, Hosta is a family of plants with over 100 varieties. Immerging from deep below the leaves, Hosta sends skyward shafts of aromatic bell, funnel, or spider shaped flowers in a wide array of pastel colors. Prized worldwide for its bold foliage found in blue, grey, light and deep shades of green, solid and variegated. Hosta will produce dense mounds of overlapping lance-shaped or heart-shaped leaves. Hosta may be grown as accent plants or as groundcovers under deep rooted deciduous trees, in a mixed border, or near water. Smaller hostas are excellent for a rock garden, peat bed or containers.

Hosta are one of the most rewarding, virtually pest free, perfect perennial foliage plants available. They add a wonderful accent to any garden and have fragrant summer flowers that can be enjoyed early summer to late fall.
We have tested over 80 species of Hosta in both Northern and Southern ranges for both heat and cold tolerance and have come up with our top 10, that are steady bloomers, which pop up in early spring and don't fade till late fall. Most other varieties we have found to be short lived or require steady pampering to reach their full potential.
You won't get field dug, bare root or immature plants. All our Hosta are 3-4 year old plants with an average of 2 to 5 plants per pot, are extremely well established and ready for division upon receipt. Hostas come in the growers pot with the growers soil mix
(NOT BARE ROOT), are very well packed and only mildly trimmed before shipping. There is NO waiting years for your Hosta to establish itself, NO guessing if a bare root plant will survive the shock of division and transportation, NO having to plant immediately just keep the pot in a shady area and water often.

The care & culture info. below is a general guideline and may or may not work in your environment.

Ideal use:  Border and independent flower garden, 24" diameter 6" deep dish garden.

Fertilize -  Fertilizer can be detrimental to colors and too much can kill the plant - so fertilize sparingly with 10-10-10 or 12-12-12. For in ground planting, broadcast a balanced granular fertilizer once a month.

Basic Division - Hosta Guacamole shown below.

New plants come very well established w/ pot.
Determine your plan of attack & remove pot.
Carefully cut through the root mass to the plant.
Divide each plant and separate their roots.
Trim off all but the center leafs to reduce stress.
Plant in a well drained, rich soil mixture.
Use a minimum 6" depth propagation dish.
Water regularly and fertilize sparingly.

Propagation - As shown above remove pups and/or divide offsets during the spring and summer when containerized plant gets bound or outside in ground plant becomes too compact. Start in shady area with no direct sunlight. New plants should be established in 1-2 months.

When you receive your new Hosta - Open your box carefully and water immediately.

Planting Information - (Click here)  Plant in ground in well drained, moist humus rich soil in the spring to fall. Plant no closer than 12"-14" apart for large plants and 6"-10" for smaller plants, to allow clumps to form and develop properly. If planted too tightly there will not be enough room for root expansion and plants will not reach their full height and bloom potential.

Pests - Deer love Hosta! Without having to set deer traps, we recommend that you simply don't attempt these plants if you have a steady flow of woodland creatures. Also slugs can be a minor problem in early spring  - to rid yourself of these unwanted pests simply sprinkle some slug and snail bait around the base of the plants.

Flowering Hosta small or large make a beautiful addition to any home, office or patio. They are easy to grow and simple to divide and share with friends. Hosta depending on the species, can often be divided into 4 or more plants in just 1 year providing you with the opportunity to spread their warmth throughout your patioscape, tropical garden, or maybe share with friends.

Note: Some Hosta species are limited to only a single crop in a year and often sell out fast! Should you not see the Hosta plant you are looking for, it is sure to show up with the next seasons crop.
