NEW INTRODUCTION / RARE SPECIES - This highly prized
extremely unusual fruit bearing cactus is a must have for any collector or
gardener with the flair for the unusual. This is a
vining, terrestrial/epiphytic cactus, with fleshy stems reaching up to 30ft.
long, in mature plants. This cactus grows out of and over the ground climbing
onto walls or over trees using aerial roots. It grows in dry, tropical or
subtropical climates where annual rainfall ranges from 20-50in. per year. In wet,
tropical zones, Hylocereus plants grow well but may sometimes have problems
setting fruit reliably. Hylocereus tolerate temperatures to 110f, and short
periods of frost, but prolonged cold will damage or kill the plant. The plants
aren't usually too picky as to soil type, but because of their epiphytic nature,
it is recommended to grow them in soil that is supplemented with high amounts of
organic material. It can be grown successfully in sandy soils, providing shade
is sometimes recommended in hot climates. As shown here flowers are vibrant and
beautiful and many related species are propagated as ornamentals. They generally
bloom only at night, and usually last just one night where pollination is
necessary to set fruit. In full production, these plants can have up to 4-6
fruiting cycles per year. The fruit produced by this plant is commonly know as dragon fruit and has an ornate
exterior of soft spikes with a bright purplish/pink, soft pulped interior flesh.
The mild and juicy fruit is easily cut in half and eaten with a spoon by the
well mannered or cut in quarters and devoured by those who just want to have
fun.
